Critical Studies Area Overview

The new essential “toolbox” for a young artist (working either at the frontier of technology or within the tradition of painting) contains the intellectual skills necessary to contextualize their production within the broader framework of contemporary culture. Critical Studies has emerged as an essential bridge between theory and practice, and its tools form the unifying pedagogical component that is central to art practice in any form.

At The UH School of Art, we are crafting a program that supports the education of artists, and establishes a practice-based program in theory, criticism, writing and curatorship. Our Critical Studies program will provide a vibrant center for critical discourse within the School of Art and the extended community.
