The University of Houston School of Art

BA in Art with Professional Development Sequence in Education

This degree program is designed for those students who are planning careers in art education. The course of study enables the student to experience the creative process in a variety of disciplines. This exposure to the techniques, aesthetic considerations, and traditional expressions in various media provides the student with an excellent foundation and the prerequisite experience necessary for teaching art. In addition to the studio experiences shaping the student's own creative growth as an artist, the courses in art history and education develop his or her insight and perspective as a teacher.

Studio courses such as painting, photography, sculpture, and ceramics help to bring about an understanding of the means of expression within the constraints of the medium. Art History courses encourage an awareness of the great talents and traditions that have preceded and influenced the practice of art. Art education courses provide the psychological and philosophical background, as well as the practical experience, to perform professionally as a teacher in the classroom. Students will experience a broad range of teaching styles from these courses, which will help their growth as future teachers.

Careers

This degree program prepares teachers in art from early childhood through to the 12th grade in public and private schools. Additional career opportunities are available through education programs in public and private museums and other institutions, including those that coordinate Artist Residency programs, which provide flexible work opportunities for artists in the community.
